‘Strong Current’

Oil on paper, 22” x 30”

Group Art Show,
‘By Land or Sea’
Shockboxx Gallery, Hermosa Beach

This painting is inspired by long distance ocean swimming. I often swim out beyond the surf, parallel to the shoreline where I can only see glimpses of the soft, unfocused edges of the top of the trees, cliffs and sometimes buildings between sets of rolling waves. Immersed in the vastness of the ocean, I can feel its energy and often swiftly changing moods. This painting is about the ocean’s sounds, textures and power.

To create this painting, I used a subtle mixture of my favorite blues - prussian blue, cerulean and paynes grey - to create depth and movement. The netting pattern is created by careful attention to the viscosity of the paint and not overworking those areas so the these details are soft and subtle.
